Dancing Away Cancer--Ananda Shankar Jayant

June 21, 2010

Last week I wrote about celebrated American choreographer and dance Anna Halprin and her triumph over cancer. Today I’m writing about another courageous woman who also used dance to focus on healing. Ananda Shankar Jayant said of her campaign to eradicate the cancer in her body, “I tuned out of cancer and I tuned into dance. Cancer became insignificant in the face of the power of dance.”

I love her description of dance. She says, “I believe, that, dance cannot be mere geometry of the body or number crunching of rhythms. It has to touch an inner core, in me the dancer and you the viewer. Grammar is only a stepping stone to poetry and spirit.”

Although she had the conventional treatments of radiation and chemotherapy to eradicate the cancer she didn’t stop there. Ananda realized that she had to make a personal investment in her healing. In this TED Talk Ananda Shakar Jayant tells her personal story and give a performance that reveals the power of dance when it embodies the joy of life.
