Grey is the New Blonde

April 26, 2010

Like it or not the years are accumulating and I’ve now entered a new stage of life. It’s not that I mind getting older it’s learning to do it with grace and ease that’s the challenge. Take hair for instance, so many of us have agonized whether to color or not color our hair. In our culture, to let your hair go grey is to admit that age is eroding you’re image of a youthful, energetic and beautiful self. However, hiding the color of your hair doesn’t halt the ravages of time and inevitably the wrinkles are going to deepen and make that dark brown head of hair look ridiculous. Let’s face it, once we cross that invisible line, people are going to know we’re not 30 or 40 or 50 any more.

I admit that I fell into the trap of coloring my hair for a while. But as the white hairs began to out number the brown it became more and more difficult to hide the skunk stripe that would inevitably appear down my part line if I didn’t get to the hair salon every four weeks. About two years ago I just plain got tired of the charade. I was scared to let my natural color out of the closet but I didn’t want to be a slave to my hair either so I just let it go. I began to realize that there were lots of women out there who were attractive and authentic. Their hair was grey or even white and they looked fabulous. I began to embrace the change and when the transformation was complete I felt much better about myself. I didn’t feel old and tired. Strange to say, I actually felt younger than before.

A few weeks ago I decided that I needed to take a more forceful stand on the issue so I went to the local t-shirt store and came out with this t-shirt. Let’s face it, our population is aging so we might as well get used to the idea that grey is not just okay--it's fabulous!
