Dynamic Stability and the Art of Falling

November 19, 2018

Moti Nativ’s two day workshop, Dynamic Stability and the Art of Falling was amazing. Through Moti’s explanations I was able to see more clearly the connection between the Feldenkrais Method and judo.

Moti’s workshop

The three of us made the trip to Calgary from the Okanagan to participate in Moti’s workshop.

Using Awareness Through Movement® lessons we learned how to feel gravity by letting go of control and then to find stability by feeling the support of the ground with our hands, feet, hip, etc. Learning to improve my use of gravity and stability in a functional way I was able to transition from lying to sitting, sitting to standing and back down to the floor again more fluidly than I had ever experienced before. Once we were able to feel the trajectories and pathways that made movement seamless we then worked with a partner to use this information functionally in judo moves. Although I don’t have aspirations to learn judo I can see many applications that will help me as I work with my clients.

From the perspective of another participant:

Moti's workshop was immense fun. None of this falling asleep during an ATM! We learned to regard falling as an option rather than a threat. We rolled off a chair onto the floor and we rolled back up onto the chair and then we rolled off a chair and back up onto our partners lap! Sitting became a dynamic process and unexpected fun. Gradually rolling from lying on the floor, from sitting on a chair evolved into rolling to stand and then working with our friend gravity to roll back onto the ground. Did I say it was fun? It was also challenging and meeting those challenges is so very satisfying.

The New Feldenkrais Professional Training Program in Canada

This is the official announcement regarding the new Canadian Feldenkrais Training program. If you know other people who might be interested please spread the news. The link in the announcement will take you to a form you can fill out to get on the official mailing list. We intend to keep people posted as things develop. We will be interviewing four candidates for the position of Educational Director in early December. It’s no longer just a dream, it is actually happening. As one of the organizers I can tell you I’m over the moon with this new development, particularly because the training will be here in Kelowna.

You may be interested in a Feldenkrais® Professional Training program in Canada. We wish to let you know that a committee has been formed to explore this possibility. Our intention is to offer a training in Western Canada (Kelowna, BC) as soon as reasonably possible. We are gathering the necessary data for Provincial registration and we intend to apply for accreditation through the North American Training Accreditation Board. We will keep you informed of our progress and hope you will spread the word.

If you wish to stay informed, sign-up on the mailing list here. We will send further information as it arises as well as information on upcoming workshops.

Thanks in advance for your support, the committee:
Sandra Bradshaw, Rob Black, Alice Friedman and Gisele St Hilaire
