Reversibility of Movement

May 2, 2017

Usually we move so fast that we’re carried by momentum; to stop a movement in process is often impossible. In a Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lesson movements are deliberately slowed down so that we can fully learn how a movement is constructed and move in any of the four cardinal directions (up, down, left and right) without preparation; in other words anywhere along the continuum of the movement you must be able to stop and go in the opposite direction without any need for adjustment. When you can do that you have mastery over the movement; then when you do the movement quickly it becomes not only easy but elegant.

During my four years of training to become a Feldenkrais® practitioner we did many Awareness Through Movement® lessons based on forward and backward judo rolls. We weren’t marshal art students but by the time we finished the series many of us were able to do both a forward and backward judo roll as easily as the fellow in the following video. The demonstration uses almost the same movement sequences that were used in our lessons. If you watch to the end you will have a better appreciation for the form that is needed to execute these movements with ease and grace.
